EMOTIONAL HEALING: A Guide to Coping with Grief After the Loss of a Loved One

Ways to overcome the loss:

Grieving is like any other emotion. One can feel grief even when they lose a bet. Can it cause you enough pain and mental suffering? We don’t think so.

But situations get serious in life sometimes, and we lose someone who we grew up with or who we shared the most beautiful memories with. And these types of incidents, my friend, can be traumatic enough that we wouldn’t understand our own emotions. We feel dejected and alone so much that we might feel that we won’t ever be able to fully recover from it.

In spite of all this, our world never stops moving. People around us want to see us recover quickly to continue with our responsibilities in our social or personal spheres. While there is not much you can do instead of feeling it all, there are ways you can deal with it in a healthier way.

Validating your emotions:

When someone closer to you passes away, life can feel more difficult than usual because the support you were getting from that person will no longer be there. In such times, sadness is common, as are other emotions. One might not be able to cry because they will be so shocked by the incident. Perhaps one might even experience numbness. Therefore, we need to understand that all of these emotions are valid enough.

We don’t need to listen to what other people are saying about grieving. Everyone has their own ways to process tragic incidents. After such a significant loss, it is hard to come to terms with our own distress. We might feel so many emotions, ranging from

  • Denial
  • Disbelief
  • Confusion
  • anger, frustration
  • Hopelessness
  • Despair
  • Physical pain
  • Symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Humiliation and guilt

Experiencing the loss fully:

Mourning is a natural process to go through after losing someone who was very close. One should not ignore their emotions in the heat of catching up with life. Life can wait for it to happen. But if you don’t take care of your emotional well-being at these crucial times, It might backfire on you later. Hence, do not deny your feelings to take a faster route towards healing.

Wait for the feelings to evolve.

Grief is not a straight highway that you will experience and get done with. The human mind evolves with time, and so do our emotions. It is complex in itself, and people often go through all the highs and lows before accepting the fact that someone is not with them anymore, which is ok.

This is the stage overview:

  1. Denial
  2. Anger
  3. Bargaining
  4. Depression
  5. Acceptance

Tell yourself that you have all the time in the world to cope with one trauma. No one is in a hurry. But it is important to grieve in a healthier way. It can take time to adjust to something that is not normal, and until then, you can cling to people who actually support and comfort you.

Here are some tips to follow that can help you cope in such difficult times:
